65 Amps is a small amp company located in North Hollywood, California. All of their amps are hand-wired and built with only the highest quality parts. In fact, because the first amps produced by the company were for players to use in concert and not as products, these amps truly are built for players. They use more than just the same types of circuits and parts that other amps use—they have come up with some very innovative ideas that have led to some of the most versatile and unique amps in the industry. One of the keys to their amazing amps is the transformers they created with Mercury Magnetics. These hand wound transformers give their amps the ability to handle much more than amps that use machine would transformers can.
The company was founded by Peter Stroud, the guitarist for Sheryl Crow. He needed a low powered amp to use in Crow’s shows that required low volumes. Crow’s lower stage volume allowed her vocals to be incredibly clean, but it was often difficult for Stroud to not overpower her with his guitar. He sat down with Dan Boul to create an amp that would be versatile enough for his tone but still not overpower the vocals. Within a few months of creating their first amp, they had requests for amps from more than two dozen other guitarists.
Because 65 Amps was created by people who are professional players first and the businessman second, they don’t design any of their amps with marketing as a primary motive. Instead, they strive to deliver amps that really help professional players find their sound.
