Egnater Amplifiers
Bruce Egnater was destined to build amazing amps. He is from Detroit, Michigan, and when he was 13 he got his first guitar; a Rickenbacker with a Silvertone Twin Twelve amp. Growing up in the Detroit rock scene he was tuning in to the likes of Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Iggy Pop, Ted Nugent, Grand Funk Railroad, and others. While still under age, Egnater snuck in to see as many concerts as he could to hear the bands and began taking an intesest in Gear.
In 1969, Egnater’s world changed when Cream and Jimi Hendrix hit the scene because both inspired him to become a professional musician. Although practicing for hours, playing in some good venues and with decent bands, he realized that making it big as a musician wouldn’t happen for him. The reason any of this is important is because the entire time he was dreaming of becoming a big name in the music business, he just didn’t realize what side it would be on. He played with his gear and tried to improve his amps to make them deliver the sound he was looking for. At the time there were no high gain tube amps or volume controls although overdrive pedals were soon available. Still, he couldn’t find the tone he was looking for. Then, he had an interesting idea. He took his small Gibson amp and instead of a speaker he hooked up a resistor and then connected it to the input of his 200 Watt Marshall. He had no idea what to expect, but what he received was an amazing concert volume with a small amp’s distortion. Soon, other players noticed what he was doing and he began setting up similar amps for others.
Before long these amps needed servicing and he started repairing them. He eventually opened an amp and guitar repair shop and business boomed. He started studying the weaknesses and strengths of amps in the market. His first goal was to build an amp with a clean channel and an overdrive channel that had separate controls. His prototype worked great and other local players became interested. It was then that Bruce Egnater saw a future in the amp business and it’s the way Egnater Amplification got its start.
Today, after 30 years Egnater Amplification continue to be innovative and push the envelope in amplification. As a result, they offer a type of flexibility and tone that you just can’t find with other amps.
