Matchless has made a number of amps over the years, and while they may not be “matchless,” they are still top quality boutique amps. The Matchless Chieftain CH-212 Boutique Amp is one of their top amps and the most powerful amp in the Chieftain line (the others are the CH-40, CH-112, and CH-210). The Chieftain CH-212 is also the most expensive Chieftain amp. A new one will cost $3,285 if ordered directly from Matchless, while a used amp will run around $2,400 or more.
The Matchless Chieftain CH-212 features two 12AX7’s for tone and two 12AX7’s for the reverb. It also makes use of a very flexible preamp circuit which is greatly enhanced by an active mid control. The two preamp tubes are coupled with two EL34 power tubes using a 12AX7 phase inverter. This created a huge power reserve, allowing the amp to offer great sound pressure levels without any tone loss. The amp also features an effects loop and controls for the volume, mid, treble, bass, brilliance, reverb, and master volume. The amp produces 40 watts of power and measures 27 inches wide by 10.75 inches deep and is 21 inches tall. This makes it small enough to transport but powerful enough to provide all the sound you need.
Similar to the Lightning 15, the Spitfire keeps it sweet and simple. It is powered by two EL84s, 12AX7s for tone, a phase inverter and a 5AR4 for the rectifier. The Spitfire comes in a lightweight, compact cabinet, but still packs the same punch you've come to expect from Matchless.
