The Orange Tiny Terror is an amplifier that has been put into a case the size of a lunchbox.  When it was first introduced, many players thought it was a novelty and didn't see how such a small amplifier could possibly deliver a decent tone. But the Terror has proved many wrong on this assumption. This is a great sounding little amp for at home and on gigs.

The May boosters are available in three models: Deluxe, Touring, and Plus.  They’re color-coded for easy recognition, and each is quite simple to use.  They’re battery-powered, so there’s no need to deal with cords.  All three of them are quite clear and provide great sound.  The Deluxe version focuses on May’s tones from the mid-seventies, while the Plus features less gain and more harmonic overdrives.  Finally, the Touring version is similar to the Deluxe but features the least amount of gain.

Overall, any of these three boosters will allow you to recreate some of May’s signature sounds.  Note that they do not mask any subtleties, so that means any mistakes you make will be quite clear.  If you’re looking for a great treble boost that is very simple to use and doesn’t cost a lot, take a look at the May line.  You’ll get great performance and at least 500 hours of use out of these.  As for which of the three you need, that all depends on what tones you want.

As far as sound goes, the SoloAmp delivers there as well.  It provides an excellent quality of sound and coverage while making everything sound natural.  It doesn’t, of course, provide everything a full sub would, but it does a great job, especially for such a small amp.  You’re definitely getting a lot of good things in this very small package, so don’t judge the SoloAmp based on its size alone.

Overall, the Fishman SoloAmp looks great, works great, has many features, and, best of all, just about anyone can learn to set it up and operate it.   It truly combines the best of both worlds: simple operations with a range of functions and abilities.  If you’re playing solo at small to medium sized venues, it may be all the amp you need.

]]> http://thegearmall.com/product-demos/fishman-soloamp-review/feed 0 The ZenTone 7 from Backline Engineering http://thegearmall.com/product-demos/the-zentone-7-from-backline-engineering http://thegearmall.com/product-demos/the-zentone-7-from-backline-engineering#comments Tue, 17 Mar 2009 14:56:06 +0000 anthony http://thegearmall.com/?p=1228 zentone7The ZenTone 7 is one of those amps that may sound very complicated at first, but fortunately, it really isn’t.  It does, though, have many different features.  The amp is great if you need a piece of equipment that can do double duty as a studio amp and a practice amp.  It is basically a digitally controlled amp that features an all-tube signal path and can be used for several things.  It includes both a four and an eight ohm speaker out, balanced XLR direct out, and speaker emulation.  You can use it as an onstage monitor or even as a high-volume amp depending on your needs.

The ZenTone 7 features a control panel that looks fairly standard and includes pretty much everything you’d expect it to, such as volume control, Bass, Mid, Treble, etc.  It also has a preset control.  Also, all of the controls on the device are digital, something a bit new.  LED readouts let you know exactly how far into each rotation you are, and you have up to 16 different settings for volume and gain (eight for tone).  The device offers great precision when it comes to tone shaping.  Also, the ZenTone 7’s knobs also work as push-buttons, something else that’s very untraditional.  For example, the master volume control, if pushed, handles triode/pentode.  The Gain knob changes between single- and dual-stage preamp.  It’s a nice way of keeping the controls simple while still providing many options.
